FORT LAUDERDALE — With the NHL taking two weeks off for the 4 Nations tournament, who knows what tonight’s game between the Florida Panthers and Seattle Kraken will look like.

Their coaches are not even sure.

The Panthers did have eight of their players stay active during the break, all playing for their respective nations in the tournament.

One will not play tonight, with coach Paul Maurice saying Matthew Tkachuk is out after he sustained what is believed to be a groin injury while playing for Team USA.

As for the quality of hockey being played tonight?

“There are a few breaks we get in the NHL schedule, and coming back from the Christmas break, games are a little scrambly and a little rough,” Seattle coach Dan Bylsma said. “There’s a slog that will be out there. We’re talking about a nine-day break here. It’s going to be a slog, it’s going to be rough.”

When we last left the Panthers two weeks ago, they were rolling strong into the break.

Florida has won five of six, with the Kraken coming off a win against Calgary.

It should be interesting.

“It’s timing,” Aaron Ekblad said. “In this day and age, everyone in this league stays in shape either skating or being on the bike to keep their legs and lungs ready.’’
