The Los Angeles Kings returned home Monday for the first time since the devastating fires ravaged southern California.

The Kings are honoring the first responders, and specifically the Los Angeles Fire Department, with a special design at center ice.

Before returning home to play the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, the Kings redesigned the logo at center ice at the former Staples Center with the team logo inside a badge with the team logo and Los Angeles Fire Department painted around it.

That logo will be on the ice tonight when the Kings play host to the Panthers at 10 p.m. on TNT.

Florida is coming off a 5-2 win in Anaheim on Tuesday night.

“Everyone plays a role, and for us, possibly, we can be a distraction even if it’s for a few hours where you get to go to a game,” Florida coach Paul Maurice said before the team flew to southern California on Monday.

“If you are a hockey fan, it’s something you love, something to take your mind off it. I am sure there will be a few people there who have lost everything, possibly lost their homes and don’t know where this goes in the future for them. So, that’s our role. Whether the visitor or home team, we get a chance to lift some spirits. We want to do that, and acknowledge what those people are going through.”

The Kings postponed their home game on Jan. 8 against Calgary because of the devastating fires, then went on a five-game road trip.

The team has been wearing decals, patches, and baseball caps honoring the Los Angeles Fire Department for the better part of a month.

On Monday, the team thanked local firefighters and held a moment of silence for the victims before losing 5-1 to the Penguins.

The Kings come into tonight’s game with losses in four of five.

“It was really humbling,’’ Kings coach Jim Hiller said. “I felt a little emotional … like those people have been out there doing some pretty amazing things and we just saw a little bit from a long distance.’’
