FORT LAUDERDALE — The Florida Panthers lost defenseman Adam Boqvist on Friday when the defenseman was claimed by the New York Islanders off NHL waivers.

Boqvist, 24, only played 18 games for the Panthers this season and none since Jan. 6.

By being claimed by the Islanders, Boqvist gets to hang out in Fort Lauderdale a bit longer.

Florida plays host to the Isles on Sunday at 6.

The younger brother of Florida forward Jesper, Adam Boqvist signed a one-year deal with the Panthers on July 9 after being bought out by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Boqvist was the eighth-overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks — who play the Panthers in Sunrise on Saturday at 1.

Florida placed Boqvist on NHL waivers on Thursday.

“I have respect for him because he has worked really hard,” Paul Maurice said Friday afternoon.

Florida had planned on assigning Boqvist to AHL Charlotte had he passed through but based on Boqvist’s upside and low salary cap hit, they put him on waivers knowing he would probably not get through.

Which seems just fine with them.

They just want Adam Boqvist to get some playing time.

Maurice said Boqvist did not initiate the move.

“He needs to play games, and he wants to play games,” Maurice said. “If he gets picked up on waivers, he’s going to play in the NHL. We just feel, by how hard he has worked and how good a pro he has been, we do not want to take that away from an NHL guy. If not, he’s going to go to Charlotte and play some games.”

Florida now only has six defensemen on the active roster with Toby Bjornfot — who got playing time instead of Boqvist when Aaron Ekblad was out — the likely replacement from Charlotte.
