Playoffs Panthers

The Florida Panthers have four games remaining before the Stanley Cup playoffs start starting with tonight’s final road test against the Chicago Blackhawks.

On Monday, the Panthers play host to the Dallas Stars with the Tampa Bay Lightning coming in for the final regular season series of the season next weekend.

Coach Joel Quenneville has been preaching that the Panthers need to continue to play true to the game even though they have already clinched a postseason berth.

This is not, he said, a time to relax.

So far, his team has responded.

Thursday night, the Panthers beat the Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime. Despite a slow start, Florida turned things on in the second and third and got two more points to keep pace — at least for now — with the Central Division leading Hurricanes.

The Panthers play the Blackhawks tonight at 8.

“We want to keep playing the right way until the end,” Quenneville said. “It’s not an on and off switch here. We want to make sure that we continue on doing what we do, playing the right way and having fun along the way doing it.”

Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar said Saturday that the Panthers are keeping their eye on the current opponent while also looking forward to the real season.

The Panthers will get some time at home to work on things as they’ll have most of next week to work in a mini-training camp and may have some days off between the end of the Tampa Bay series and the start of the playoffs — which will probably be against the Lightning.

“There is still a lot on the line, we can still get first place in our division,” Weegar said. “Keeping this momentum going into the playoffs is important. We want to finish strong and keep the same winning attitude going into the playoffs. There’s a lot on the line here.”

Said Noel Acciari: “We want to be playing our best hockey going into the playoffs. We know we clinched, but at the same time we want to be playing the same hockey that’s got us here.”

The Panthers know they’ll probably be playing the Lightning in Round 1 as it appears they will not catch Carolina.

Although Florida comes into the day just two points back of the Hurricanes, they have played two more games. And Carolina is not losing.

The Hurricanes have six games remaining against Columbus, Chicago and Nashville.

Florida, to have a chance, likely has to win its remaining four games and hope Carolina loses a few next week.

“We’ll see how it plays out,” Quenneville said. “Whether it’s Tampa or either team, we want to finish as high as we can. Then you’re thinking home ice. We’re very happy to be in the playoffs. It’s not the best draw on the planet, but to be a champion, you have to beat the best and we’ll get tested throughout it if you go that far.

“We’re going to have our hands full immediately. It’s going to be a great challenge. In the meantime, we’ll position ourselves the best we can in these final four games.”

BOB TIME

Sergei Bobrovsky returns to net for the Panthers on Saturday night after Spencer Knight got the start on Thursday.

Quenneville also said Nikita Gusev would get back into the lineup as the only other lineup change from Thursday night’s win.

Mason Marchment and Chris Driedger are skating and Quenneville said both would play when the Panthers return home.
