A game between the Eastern Conference’s two divisional leaders did not disappoint Tuesday, but for the second time this season, the Washington Capitals got the best of the Florida Panthers.

Washington never trailed in a game that Florida tied twice, pulling out a 6-3 win.

The Panthers saw their three-game winning streak end, while the Capitals avoided their first losing streak of the season.

The two play again in March.

Down 1-0, the Panthers tied it late in the first on a goal from Sam Bennett.

Down 2-1, Sasha Barkov beat Jakob Chychrun to a skittering puck, backhanding a shot past Logan Thompson.

Tied at 2 going into the third, the Capitals scored twice within the first 6:10 to take control of the game — even though the Panthers made a hard charge with Matthew Tkachuk scoring to make it a one-goal game.

Sergei Bobrovsky ended with 19 saves.

GAME NOTES: PANTHERS @ CAPITALS

  • Alex Ovechkin (878) is now 17 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky (894) for the most goals in NHL history after scoring with 0.01 left into an empty net on Tuesday.
  • With an assist on Barkov’s goal, Sam Reinhart (31-29, 60) became the first player in franchise history to record 60 points in their first four seasons with the club. He was tied with Ray Whitney (1997-00).
  • Bennett’s goal late in the first was 14th in the final 30 seconds of a period this season — which leads the league. Vegas has 13.

HOW THEY SCORED

  • Capitals 1, Panthers 0 (14:08 1st): Andrew Mangiapane rips one from the left circle and beats Sergei Bobrovsky.
  • Panthers 1, Capitals 1 (19:30 1st): Sam Bennett finds his own rebound and shovels a backhander over the head of a lowered Logan Thompson.
  • Capitals 2, Panthers 1 (1:15 2nd SH): Aaron Ekblad gets stripped of the puck at the top of the zone leading to a 2-on-1 headed by Alinksei Protas. He ships it across to Tom Wilson for the go-ahead goal.
  • Panthers 2, Capitals 2 (4:14 2nd): Sasha Barkov outraces Jakob Chychrun to a loose puck, skates through the slash, and backhands a shot through.
  • Capitals 3, Panthers 2 (2:19 3rd): Dmitry Kulikov and Niko Mikkola can’t control the puck in the neutral zone, and Lars Eller drives in for Washington’s third goal of the night.
  • Capitals 4, Panthers 2 (6:10 3rd): Nic Dowd gets behind the Florida D, takes a pass from Mangiapane in the slot and puts it through just before crashing into Bobrovsky for the second time.
  • Capitals 4, Panthers 3 (7:46 3rd 4/4): Matthew Tkachuk rips a one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Nate Schmidt.
  • Capitals 5, Panthers 3 (18:21 3rd EN): Protas ends the Florida rally by scoring the empty net.

If I live to be 100, will never understand merit of pulling goalie and then adding to our losing spread by 2 or more. Is it just a male attitude, we can come back? How often does it really happen?
When is Wilson retiring?
