Panthers quarter century

SUNRISE — Later today, the NHL will announce the official Quarter Century Team, a group of 12 players who represent the 2000s, for the Florida Panthers.

A few weeks ago, we asked our readers at FHN to come up with their team under the same rules as the NHL used for their quarter century team.

The basic rules are this: To be eligible to be on the team, a player would have had to play for the Panthers from Jan. 1, 2000, or later.

We voted on six forwards, four defensemen, and two goalies.

Probably have a couple of Hall of Famers in this group. Well, one is already there.

The Quarter Century teams announced today by the NHL will be players who were voted on by a select panel from each franchise including media, retired players and “executives specific to that club.”

The NHL will hold a league-wide fan vote from February 12-26 to select the NHL Quarter-Century Team.

The fan vote will determine the top 25 players of the past 25 years — regardless of position or team.

Voting will be online and via Twitter.

Only players named to a Club’s First Quarter-Century Team will be eligible for selection.

For full disclosure, I was part of the committee picking Florida’s Quarter Century team and will release my 12 players once the NHL does.

This is your team.

And, there were a few surprises.

First off, Pavel Bure, who still holds a number of franchise records despite not playing very much with the Panthers, did not make your Top 6 for forwards.

Only two players — Sasha Barkov and Sam Reinhart — were on all the ballots received here at FHN.

Even Hall of Famer Roberto Luongo was left off one of them.

So, without further ado, here is the FHN Florida Panthers Quarter Century Team as voted on by you, the fans.
