The Florida Panthers Lost to the Bruins. They Shouldn’t Have

SUNRISE — The Florida Panthers never led against a team that had lost six straight games, yet felt pretty good about the way they played on Saturday.
So, they ended up losing 4-3 in overtime to the Boston Bruins.
This one would be the definition of a game which could have gone either way.
Or, in a perfect world for the Panthers, should have been a blowout.
Only it was not.
Florida trailed for much of a game it absolutely dominated.
Then, down 3-2 in the final moments, Sam Reinhart scored Florida’s first goal of the season when they had the goalie on the bench.
That tied the score 3-3 with 1.8 seconds on the clock and forced overtime.
Once there, the Bruins turned those tables with David Pastrnak scoring a 4-on-3 power-play goal with only 1.2 seconds left in overtime.
Would the Panthers have won in shootout?
Maybe.
Would Boston have pulled out a regulation win had Reinhart not floated a shot over Jeremy Swayman’s head as the seconds ticked down to zero?
Certainly.
So, the Panthers really should be happy they got a point out of Saturday’s game.
And, they were OK with the end result.
Because they know how well they played and, had it not been for Swayman, woulda-shoulda won this thing.

The Bruins, on the other hand, had to be thrilled just to even be in Saturday’s game much less get the win.
They should, and did, thank Swayman for that.
The Boston goalie made 40 saves in a game that Florida took aim at the net 111 times.
Boston had just 39 shot attempts.
That’s the way it works sometimes.
“He was the difference in the game,” Boston interim coach Joe Sacco said of Swayman.
“The goalie played very well and that’s what you need sometimes when you are going through the situation we are. We had outstanding goaltending today, and that was the difference in the game.”
Florida downright dominated the play on the ice, yet, allowed the Bruins to stick around long enough to take advantage of their few chances.
The Panthers, despite outshooting Boston 43-18, did not hold a lead one time on Saturday.
Boston took a lead four different times on Saturday, including when it counted most after Pastrnak’s shot from the right circle deflected off Reinhart’s stick and flew past Bobrovsky.
Sometimes, that is just the way things go.
Cookies crumbling and whatnot.
It was one of those days for the Panthers who were obviously the better team on Saturday but only got a point out of it.
They have been on the other side of games like this in the past.
“I think that is the best game we have played in quite some time,’’ said Evan Rodrigues, who scored to make it 1-1 in the first period.
“Obviously, you don’t want that result, you want the two points. That’s not one we are going to hang our heads on or sulk about.”
